5 Play-Based Ways to Encourage Language at Home

1. Follow Their Lead

Join in on what your child is already playing. If they're playing with cars, grab one and drive alongside them. Narrate what you're doing: "Go fast! Oh no, a crash!"

2.Use Repetition

Repeat key words over and over during play: "Ball. Throw the ball. Big ball!"

Repetition helps words stick.

3. Pause and Wait

Give your child a chance to talk by pausing after a question or comment. Look at them with interest and wait 5 seconds.

4. Model Simple Phrases

Speak in short, clear phrases just above your child's current level:

  • If they say "truck," you say "big truck!"

  • If they say "go," you say "go fast!"

5. Add Sound Effects & Fun Noises

Animal sounds, vehicle noises, and silly words like "uh-oh!" or "wheee!" make language fun and easy to imitate.
